About The Intrepid Angeleno

It All Started With Birdwatching…

I hope my Intrepid Angeleno blog inspires you to get out and explore your own neck of the woods. There’s so much fun to be had in this world and we only get one short lifetime in which to do it.

Looking back, it’s hard to believe that before April 2011, I didn’t really do much on my downtime. I either had my nose in a book or glued to a computer monitor.

Then, one day in 2011 when the miserable, hot summer was approaching, I made a decision that I was not going to “hate” summer anymore. I made a plan where I would “force” (!!!) myself to do at least one fun thing every weekend throughout the summer.

The first thing I did was go birdwatching. Birdwatching!!!

Anyone who knows me just spit out their water because I’ve always been nervous around birds, like pigeons or seagulls. I don’t even remember what search words I Googled that resulted in me finding out about a guided birdwatching activity at King Gillette Ranch. I had never been on a hike or anything like that and had no hiking clothes. I wore jeans and athletic shoes. But from the moment the Ranger, before we’d seen even a single bird, said “Look! There’s a fox!” I was hooked.

Who knew that the girl who hates the sun and is terrified of bugs would one day be hiking through all kinds of weather and insects? Or that the girl who grew up hating any form of exercise would eventually love hiking more than anything else?

So yeah! I hope this blog inspires you to research fun things to do–doesn’t have to be hiking!– in your neighborhood (or someone else’s neighborhood) and go out and do them.

Let me know if you need suggestions on how to get started.
